Project details
Start date: 01/04/2002
End date: 31/03/2005
Description: This project seeks to develop, characterise and demonstrate a novel display interface that is fully wearable and portable for the delivery of information to users operating in multi-functional contexts. The main applications will be: vision enhancement and navigation in driving, specialised computer assisted operations (surgeons, assembly workers), office applications, entertainment, infotainment, vision enhancement for visually impaired people, etc. The system will be composed of a primary display source, a compact light-guiding system for the projection of images, a variable-transmittance optical window to allow for different background intensities (adaptive see-through), a miniaturised inertial system (based on MEMS technology) for the tracking of head position and orientation (to work in conjunction with a GPS module), a radio-frequency Rx/Tx module for the exchange of information between the interface and the base station (including master navigator, image generator), CMOS camera, speakers, microphone, rechargeable battery and driver electronics.
