Type of grant(s):
- International travel: series of grants providing support for a period of advanced study or research at a overseas centre of learning and /or stimulating academic environment;
- Early Career Fellowships: provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers but with a proven record of research;
- Research assistance: provide financial support for innovative and original research projects of high quality and potential, conducted by PIs, experienced researchers and established research and Emeritus fellows;
- Research leave: support a period overseas in a stimulating academic environment other than straight-forward research (e.g., the exchange of ideas or the development of new lines of research and collaboration);
- Visits by foreign scholars: enable distinguished academics based overseas to spend time at a UK university, primarily in order to enhance the skills of academic staff or the student body within the host institution.
Size of grant(s):
- International travel grants:
- Study Abroad Fellowships: max £21K;
- Study Abroad Studentships: basic annual maintenance allowance of £15K;
- International Networks: max £125K.
- Early Career Fellowships: 50% of each Fellow's total salary costs up to a maximum of £22,000, plus up to £5K research expenses;
- Research Assistance Grants:
- Research Projects Grant: spend of up to £250K over a duration of two to three years;
- Research Fellowships: max £35K;
- Emeritus Fellowships: max £20K.
- Research leave:
- Major Research Fellowships: takes the form of providing a replacement staff member (via provision of the salary costs of a full-time replacement) to cover the period of the Fellowship.
- Visits by foreign scholars:
- Visiting Professorships: various (reflecting the individual circumstances of the visitor and the nature and duration of the proposed activities);
- Visiting Fellowships: up to £27.5K (including spouse and London allowance) plus return fare for the Fellow and spouse/partner.

- Study Abroad Studentships: Annual call for applications;
- International Networks: Open (for outline applications). If Outline Applications successfully pass initial review, the applicant is invited to prepare a Full Application;
- Early Career Fellowships: annual call for applications;
- Research Project Grants: open (for outline applications). If Outline Applications which successfully pass initial review, the applicant will be invited to prepare a Full Application;
- Research Fellowships: Annual call for applications;
- Emeritus Fellowships: Annual call for applications;
- Major Research Fellowship: Annual call for applications;
- Visiting Professorship: Biannual call for applications;
- Visiting Fellowship: Annual call for applications.
Eligibility/Restrictions:
- Eligible primarily to universities, other institutions of higher and further education in the UK, and registered charities in the UK. The scheme is also open to institutions or organisations of similar status in developing countries where, in the opinion of the Trustees, the provision of research funding is seriously limited;
- Individual grant types also carry specific eligibility criteria.
