Activities: The All India Confederation of the Blind's twin objectives are of advocacy and
introducing innovative and model programmes aimed at the education, training and rehabilitation of
both rural and urban blind persons. AICB is affiliated to the WBU and has 20 grass-roots level organisatios
of the blind all over India affiliated to it. It has a recording studio for the preparation of books
for the college students, a middle level residential school for the blind along with a comprehensive
resources centre complete with a tactile museum, a geography room, a science laboratory, a unit for
the adjustment training for the newly blinded, and a training programme for stenographers and computer
operators. AICB also has a research section.

Asian Blind Union (ABU)

Activities: ABU has been undertaking a wide range of programmes and activities. It strives to actively strengthen its Affiliates. It has been organizing leadership training seminars to provide these organizations with competent and skilled leaders. ABU as also created the Capacity-Building Project which has been providing basic assistive devices and technical assistance to the Affiliate organisations. The ABUs Women’s Committee work continuously to raise the profiles of blind women in the concerned organizations. It has completed research studies on the status of blind women in the three sub-regions. ABU has also organized courses for providing enriched skills and updated knowledge to different professionals. Thus, teachers of subjects like Maths, Science and Geography, low vision professionals, mobility instructors etc. have been covered at these short duration programmes. ABU strives to provide translations in Arabic and Russian, of all major documents, such as its Newsletter, Research reports, Constitution, etc.

Activities: One of the prime concerns of the school is to see that the students join the mainstream of life and secure gainful employment. While, therefore, the school emphasizes extra-curricular activities including music, crafts, sports, physical exercises and even enrolment of its wards as scouts and guides, there is a well planned programme for vocational training, typewriting, light engineering and training for teachers and telephone operators. The Calcutta Blind School has also opened a research wing, where the main focus would be on the study of the socioeconomic conditions of the visually handicapped in the context of their family, community and the society at large as well as on education and the preventive and curative aspects of sightlessness. The research wing has plans to also develop training modules for adults.
